Dave Paine started training in Wado Ryu Karate in 1982 at his home in West Wales. After a gap where he studied physics at Bath University he resumed his karate training by joining the KUGB Chandlers Ford Shotokan Karate Club in 1990 under the then chief instructor, Robin Lomax (now 4th dan).
He was awarded shodan in 1993 and, shortly after the departure of Robin, became chief instructor. After a layoff in 2002 due to time commitments, Dave moved to Wantage in 2004 and immediately joined the Wantage Karate Club which he now attends on a regular basis. Dave was awarded his first black belt in 1993 and currently holds the grade of sandan (3rd dan).
During his karate training, Dave has trained under, among others, Senseis Enoeda (8th dan), Aidan Trimble (7th dan), Andy Sherry (7th dan), Terry O'Neill (7th dan), Bob Poynton (7th dan), Bob Rhodes (7th dan), Frank Brennan (7th dan), Italo Castellaro (7th dan), Richard Amos (6th dan), Billy Higgins (6th dan), Otha (6th dan), Cyril Cummings (6th dan), Peter Manning (6th dan).
