Dave Paine started training in Wado Ryu Karate in 1982 under Barbara Mumberson (now 6th dan) and Peter Spanton (now 8th dan) at his home in West Wales. After a gap where he studied at Bath university he resumed his karate training by joining the Chandlers Ford Shotokan Karate Club in 1990 under the then chief instructor, Robin Lomax (now 4th dan).
He was awarded shodan in 1993 and, shortly after the departure of Robin, became chief instructor of the Chandlers Ford Karate Club. After a layoff in 2002 due to time commitments, Dave moved to Wantage in 2004 and immediately joined the Wantage Karate Club which he now attends on a regular basis. Dave was awarded nidan in 2004 and sandan in 2007 by the TSKA panel.
During his karate training, Dave has trained under, among others, Senseis Enoeda (8th dan), Aidan Trimble (7th dan), Andy Sherry (7th dan), Terry O'Neill (7th dan), Bob Poynton (7th dan), Bob Rhodes (7th dan), Richard Amos (6th dan), Frank Brennan (6th dan), Billy Higgins (6th dan), Otha (6th dan), Cyril Cummings (6th dan), Peter Manning (6th dan).
